    I've always felt that the recurrence of the theme at the end expresses the nostalgic feeling of the townsfolk about Till's playful pranks.

    Richard Strauss as a determined and deadly decadent! How charmingly absurd! This critic unwittingly fell into Till's trap! Glory be to R. Strauss to relish his wicked/clever humour (don't you just love the 'Berlioz-march' to the gallows? Thank you for this posting 😅

    I've always thought the ending was Tyl appearing again; Tyl isnt a real person, but an idea, and you can't execute an idea.
