A thorough review of the history and practice of Wikipedia. History of encyclopaedias. Quotes from Jimbo, Essjay, William Connolley, etc. Ends "Wikipedia offers endless opportunities for self-expression. It is the love child of reading groups and chat rooms, a second home for anyone who has written an Amazon review. This is not the first time that encyclopedia-makers have snatched control from an élite, or cast a harsh light on certitude. Jimmy Wales may or may not be the new Henry Ford, yet he has sent us tooling down the interstate, with but a squint back at the railroad. We’re on the open road now, without conductors and timetables. We’re free to chart our own course, also free to get gloriously, recklessly lost. Your truth or mine? "

CUTPASTE

edit

Hi Ganesh. I've (hopefully) fixed the cutpaste move. Basically, if you want A redirecting to B in the end, first delete B. Then, move A to B. View edit history of B. Click on restore the deleted edits. WP:CUTPASTE has more details. -- Sundar \talk \contribs 06:57, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Blue-ice areas are regions of Antarctica where the ice surface has a blue colour, contrasting with the more common white Antarctic surface. They form around 1% of the continent's ice area. Blue-ice areas typically form when the movement of both air and ice are obstructed by topographic obstacles such as mountains that emerge from the ice sheet, generating particular climatic conditions where the net snow accumulation is exceeded by wind-driven sublimation and snow transports. They are noted for being hard and flat, enabling their use as a runway, in addition to their stability. Ice of up to 2.7 million years in age has been extracted from blue-ice areas. There are also large numbers of meteorites accumulated on them, either from direct falls or having been transported from elsewhere by ice flow. This NASA photograph shows a blue-ice area in the Miller Range, with a meteorite.Photograph credit: Nina Lanza / NASA
