In all this long stay in Ushuaia, I have seen many more cloudy and/or rainy days than sunny and clear days. This has become habitual for me, but when tourists arrive at the hostel asking if the ‘bad’ weather is going to last long, it is my turn to say that this is the normal weather we have in the city. As part of my job as a receptionist, I always encourage newcomers not to be discouraged by this, and I encourage them to go out for a walk anyway, because this place is beautiful no matter what weather we have 😃.
En toda esta larga estadía en Ushuaia, me han tocado ver muchos más días nublados y/o lluviosos, que días soleados y despejados. Esto ya se volvió habitual para mí, pero cuando los turistas llegan al hostel preguntando si el clima "malo" va a durar mucho, es mi turno de decir que este es el clima normal que tenemos en la ciudad. Como parte de mi trabajo de recepcionista, siempre aliento a los recién llegados a no desanimarse por esto, y los animo a salir a dar una vuelta igual, porque este lugar es lindo independientemente del clima que tengamos 😃.
Of course, city walks look much better on a sunny day, but this is a rare thing to have here. Most of the walks in Ushuaia look like the pictures below, with a grey background and cold weather, which makes everything a bit melancholic. In my normal life in Buenos Aires I don't like cloudy days at all, but here I had to get used to them and go for walks anyway: otherwise I would have to stay cooped up in the hostel all day 😅.
Por supuesto que los paseos en la ciudad lucen muchísimo mejor en un día soleado, pero esto es raro de tener por acá. La mayoría de los paseos en Ushuaia se ven como en las fotos a continuación, con un fondo gris y clima frío, que vuelve todo un poco melancólico. En mi vida normal en Buenos Aires no me gustan para nada los días nublados, pero acá me tuve que acostumbrar a ellos y a salir a dar paseos igual: de lo contrario, tendría que estar encerrada en el hostel todo el día 😅.
What I like about this place is that it is a small city and its tourist centre can be covered from end to end in just one afternoon. If you are a newcomer and you have the money, you can opt for the classic city tour that for $20 takes you around the city in a double-decker bus while they tell you about the most interesting sights here. But if you're a young traveller on a budget but full of energy, the same tour can be done on foot 😃.
Lo que me gusta de este lugar es que es una ciudad pequeña y su centro turístico puede recorrerse de punta a punta en solo una tarde. Si eres un recién llegado y tenes dinero, podes optar por el clásico paseo turístico de city tour que por $20 te lleva a recorrer la ciudad en un bus de dos pisos mientras te van contando cuáles son los puntos más interesantes de aquí. Pero si eres un joven viajero con un presupuesto cuidado pero lleno de energía, este mismo recorrido se puede hacer perfectamente a pie 😃.
On my leisurely walks around the city, not including a lot of kilometres into the mountains, I always visit the waterfront, which is where almost everything is. Museums, parks, a coastal corridor and a small bay full of birds. You can also visit San Martin Avenue where all the shops are, but if you are more into nature, walking along the Beagle Channel is the best option 😃.
En mis paseos tranquilos por la ciudad, sin incluir un montón de kilómetros dentro de las montañas, siempre visito la costanera que es donde hay casi todo. Museos, parques, un corredor costero y una pequeña bahía llena de pájaros. También se puede visitar la avenida San Martín donde se encuentran todos los locales comerciales, pero si te gusta más la naturaleza, caminar al costado del Canal de Beagle es la mejor opción 😃.
My favourite part of the city, and one that I highly recommend to tourists to get a first glimpse of Ushuaia, is the Mirador Centenario. It is a kind of park built on the top of a small hill, with stairs and wooden landings to be able to contemplate the city. From there you can get a very good view of Maipú Avenue, the Encerrada Bay, the airport and also the city cemetery. Every time I pass by, I am surprised by the location of the cemetery in the centre of the city, which from above looks like another small delimited city. Even that is very neat and matches the aesthetics of Ushuaia, what do you think 😃?
Mi parte favorita de la ciudad y que recomiendo mucho a los turistas para tener un primer acercamiento a lo que es la ciudad de Ushuaia, es el Mirador Centenario. Se trata de una especie de parque construido en la subida de un pequeño monte, con escaleras y descansos de madera para poder contemplar la ciudad. Desde ahí se puede obtener una vista muy buena de lo que es la avenida Maipú, la Bahía Encerrada, el aeropuerto y también el cementerio de la ciudad. Cada vez que paso por ahí me sorprende la ubicación del cementerio en pleno centro, que desde arriba parece otra pequeña ciudad delimitada. Incluso eso es muy prolijo y concuerda con la estética de Ushuaia, ¿qué les parece 😃?
The grey days may not seem so tempting at first, but they are not bad for a walk in the fresh air either. Being at the end of the world you can't escape the cold, so it's all about wrapping up warm and getting out and exploring. Even rain is quite normal here, so I also recommend that guests have waterproof clothing just in case. When you go on a trip you can't choose the weather you want, so it's best to accept your lot and enjoy it anyway 😃.
Los días grises pueden parecer no tan tentadores al principio, pero tampoco están mal para un paseo al aire libre. Estando en el fin del mundo no puedes escaparte del frío, por lo que todo es cuestión de abrigarse bien y salir a explorar. Incluso la lluvia es muy normal acá, por lo que también recomiendo a los huéspedes tener ropa impermeable por si acaso. Cuando uno va de viaje no puede elegir el clima que quiere, por lo que lo mejor es aceptar el que te tocó en suerte y disfrutarlo de todos modos 😃.

It's true that the days in Ushuaia are always gray and cold, but there's so much beauty that you get used to it and go out for a walk anyway.
Although it's a small city, there are many interesting places to visit, especially if you're looking for travel souvenirs.

Honestly speaking that's how I would also feel if the weather was not the one I expected. However, I'll try my best to change my mood especially if I am a newcomer to a certain place. Yes, this type of weather also makes me feel melancholic. Beautiful murals on the building's walls. Sometimes it's better to explore a new place on foot depending on one's energy heheh... Beautiful walk around the city area with a view of the snow-capped mountain seen from a distance.
Yes, you have to separate your mood of the weather, this way the trip improves.
