  • The RB25 is one of those stand out engines offering loads of performance and with a wide range of performance upgrades could be the base for a 10 second car.
    We look at 8 of the best mods and upgrades for your RB25 engine highlighting the pros an cons and what to expect.
    At different power levels you will expose weaker areas and we will help you focus on these so you don't make the same common mistakes we often see in the average Skyline tuning project.
    Remapping via a piggyback or aftermarket ECU is an essential but we also discuss turbo upgrades, boost controllers and a very simple mod that will force NVCS to kick in all the time, provide much more boost at low rpm driving conditions.
    Please let us know in the comments below what you've done to your RB25, which mods and upgrades worked best for you and pass on any tips for our viewers and readers.
    The article on our main site is regularly updated and we are keen to pass on developments and tips when it comes to tuning your RB25 engine so please drop in and have a look around our main website.

    Great info. Slight correction to the 2 stage factory boost levels. Stage 1 is 5psi & stage 2 is 7psi not .5 & .7 bar.
    I've been playing with RB's for 13 or so years, specifically the NEO. All of the below is hp at the rear wheels, we don't use BHP down under.
    The Neo in a r34 makes about 220hp at the wheels. Exhaust, intake, front mount intercooler & boost controller will get you to about 250hp. Aftermarket ecu & tune bumps you to 300rwhp. Throw on a bigger turbo & fuel pump & wind it up to 360rwhp where the factory injectors will be maxed out. Bigger injectors & you will happily have 400rwhp all day with great reliability. Going to ethanol you could push closer to 500rwhp & thats when you need to do some engine work. I'm currently at 620rwhp & just installed a bigger turbo looking for 700rwhp

      Hey mate, Solid info there thanks. I'm just trying to get a picture for my build, currently stock as a rock 1995 R33 GTS-T with splitfires, front mount return flow and 3" exhaust. Would similar numbers apply to the non neo motor? I hit up a local tuner and he said that they wont tune it to more than 320whp on 98 for reliability. I thought they could sit at around 350whp reliably on 98. My plan is haltec 2500, raceworks FFP and fuel rail, 1050cc injectors, 460 walbro, FRP, front mount intercooler, 6boost high mount with a g25-660 turbo external gate into 3" exhaust. I just want a nice fast spool and not crazy power, would be happy with 350whp on 98. Any info would be muchly appreciated. Thanks mate!

      Bro great info can you give an avise? I have a tiptronic gearbox r34 rb25det single turbo (stock) .. what I did ..change the stock ECU to a mine's ECU , straight Pipe, change the downpipe, put a Front intercooler, my goal it's 400 / or maybe 450hp or.maybe whp..can you tell me pls what else do I need? Maybe a walbro Fuel Pimp, should I change the injectors? Can a digital boost controller like hks work well AND still reliable ?

    Im thinking buying a '98 240 s14 with rb25 (they turbo it with a Holser hx30 turbo) swap and 300zx ecu, diff and drive shafts to the wheels, manual transmission. He said engine never open, actually running 300whp, im not sure about the 300zx ECU, dashboard revs and speed doesnt work.
    Great info! Thans!

    I have an r34 gtt with a rb25det neo, it had a nistune ECU, R35 560 injectors, R35 AMF, walbro 255 fuel pump, gtx3071r turbo, front mount intercooler, 3" exhaust and making 350 whp. I have installed a G30 660 .74 AR, Link g4x plug and play, 02 wide band and is now 450 whp. I need a clutch and fuel pump if I want to get 500 whp.
    1# 3" Exhaust (sounds way better)
    2# ECU (driveability)
    3# Fuel pump 4# injectors (more power)
    5# Turbo GTX3076R will fit in stock location (G30 770 is the best suited to an RB25 but it is lots of work exhaust manifold, waste gate etc)

    Info for the Auto RBs;
    If you've got a Auto R33, or S1/2 RB25 (N/A & Turbo, non-neo) and have been told you CAN'T run a aftermarket standalone ECU, you've been lied too.
    You're going to need to modify the gearbox, and install a "Manualised" Valvebody. This allows the gearbox to function fully manual via oil line pressure with a 4 gear ratcheting shifter, poor mans sequential. No longer requiring the stock ECU to control the box, youre open to any ECU that supports the RB platform.
    **** Keep reading for my personal advice ****
    The R33 came with a RE4R01a Gearbox, with a manual valvebody id seen up to a peak of 504rwhp on the dyno with my R33.
    Now, this is where the limitations of the box stand, though if you intended to make more power dont stress. Nissan GU Patrols came with the RE4R03a, the heavy duty version which stock have seen up to 700WHP and built 1000WHP.
    Best kicker is that they share the same valvebody, so no need to re-buy if youre going from a 01a to a 03a box. Slap in the valvebody and off you go!
    Option of Transparent and a highstall are available if building the box out.
    The killer for these boxs are heat, so make sure ti upgrade your trans oil cooler away from the integration with the radiators and get a stand-alone.

      I have a DET NEO but it’s automatic. And I’ve looked up and down but every ECU says manual only most notably haltech and Linc both are manual only. Can this also apply to my car in hopes to make the ECU work on an automatic?

    Im planing on running an Apexi FC but I dont seem to see ANY videos of the positives and negatives on it. The only thing I’ve seen people talk about is how you cant have any “pops and bangs” tune since you cant put negative timing.

    • @MrVuittonDon
      @MrVuittonDon Год назад +3

      DO NOT, of your in USA do a Haltech. Or GLink if your in UK and Austrailia. All those old ECUs don't have many tuners around anymore

      I have a power fc and I have to drive around 5 and a half close to 6 hrs to the nearest power fc tuner. Not ideal

      They are very dated, compared to Haltech Link, syvec etc. Spend the money for a modern ecu. over time you can lean about it and dignose/adjust the tune it yourself + add safety related sensors and it will prevent near all engine failures or you doing something silly. But the first mod on an rb engine would be oil return drain and baffled extended sump. Don't add power
